Conventional sanitary napkins contain about 90% plastic. A study on various brands found multiple phthalate groups—chemicals that make plastics flexible and durable—which can harm women's reproductive systems [1]. As a result, many start-ups are shifting toward biodegradable materials and organic fibers, but this transition requires closer scrutiny.

Brands marketing their products as "organic" often fail to explain why their pads or liners are bright white. Although they may claim to be free from chlorine bleaching, neither bamboo nor cotton fibers are naturally white—they are typically off-white. To achieve a bright white appearance, manufacturers often use hydrogen peroxide, a strong oxidizing agent.

Direct or excessive exposure to hydrogen peroxide can harm vaginal health, causing irritation, lipid peroxidation, and corrosive damage to mucous membranes [2]. It can also release oxygen gas, potentially leading to inflammation or respiratory distress if inhaled [2]. Hydrogen peroxide does not protect against vulvovaginal candidiasis—a yeast infection caused by Candida overgrowth [3]—and excessive exposure can disrupt vaginal microbiota and damage tissues [3].

Awenda offers pads and liners in their natural off-white shade, avoiding hydrogen peroxide or other harsh whitening agents. By embracing the natural color of bamboo and cotton fibers, Awenda prioritizes vaginal health while promoting sustainable, chemical-free menstrual care.
